A carucate was a medieval unit of land measurement based on the amount of land that could be cultivated by a team of oxen.

It was closely related to the hide and was often divided into smaller units such as bovates.

Carucates were used in medieval taxation, surveys and descriptions of estates. The actual area represented by a carucate varied considerably depending on soil quality, farming methods and local custom.
