A managed area of woodland where trees were regularly cut back to produce new growth.

A coppice was an area of woodland managed by repeatedly cutting trees close to the ground so that new shoots would grow.

Coppicing provided a regular supply of small timber, poles and fuel. It was an important woodland management practice on many estates.

Because woodland resources were valuable, rights to cut or use coppice were often controlled by the lord of the manor and regulated through custom.
