An important manorial resource providing timber, fuel and other materials.

Woodland was an important resource within many medieval and early modern manors.

Woodlands provided timber for building, fuel for households, materials for tools and opportunities for grazing animals. They could also generate income through rights such as pannage.

Access to woodland resources was often controlled by the lord of the manor and regulated through customary rights.

Manorial courts frequently dealt with disputes concerning unlawful cutting, grazing and other uses of woodland.
