A manorial officer responsible for impounding stray animals.

A pinder was a manorial officer responsible for dealing with stray or unlawfully grazing animals.

Animals found wandering on common land, roads or another person’s property could be taken to the pound until their owner reclaimed them and paid any charges due.

The pinder’s role helped enforce rules concerning livestock, grazing and property boundaries.

References to pinders and pounds in court rolls provide evidence of how rural communities regulated the use of land and animals.
