A written record or extract from a manorial court roll showing a person’s rights in a holding.
In manorial records, a copy was a written extract from the court roll provided as evidence of a tenant’s rights to a holding.
This practice gave rise to the term “copyhold”, because the tenant’s title was based on a copy of the manorial court record.
The copy recorded the admission of the tenant and the customs or conditions attached to the holding.
